Antiques dealer and jeweler, Morris Herman, is dead at 85

MORRIS HERMAN, a successful antiques dealer and jeweler, who ran the J. Herman Son Antiques store on Royal Street, died peacefully at his home in New Orleans on Tuesday morning, September 2, 2014. He was 85 years old.

Herman was the last of his family of five siblings. Following graduation from Alcee Fortier High School, he attended Tulane University. He began a career as a real estate broker for many years prior to his re-establishing the antique store which bore his father’s name at 321 Royal Street. Herman ran the store along with help from friends until the time of his retirement last year.

He was a member of several business, social, civic and charitable organizations, especially the Royal Street Merchants Association. A delightful raconteur, Herman was known to those of upper strata society and denizens of the French Quarter alike. He was a fashion plate, who enjoyed being seen and cutting a rug at social events.

He is survived by several nieces as well as several nephews, many of whom served as pallbearers.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 2:00 pm in Chevra Thilim Memorial Park Cemetery, 5000 Iberville St., at Helena St.. Rabbi Robert Loewy officiated. Condolences may be expressed online at www.tharpsontheimerfh.com. For more information 504-835-2341.
