Suspect in Peter Gold shooting arrested; held without bond

A suspect in the Friday morning shooting of “good Samaritan” Peter Gold was apprehended and arrested late Monday morning, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Euric Cain, 21, was arrested at an apartment in the 2200 block of Delachaise Street and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Nictoria Washington, was arrested and charged as an accessory after the fact for harboring the fugitive.

Cain, who confessed to NOPD officers, is being charged with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and armed robbery and attempted armed robbery. He was ordered held without bond on the first two of the charges by an Orleans Parish Magistrate commissioner, who also set bond on the robbery charges at $250,000 and $150,000, respectively.

Gold, a Jewish fourth-year medical student at Tulane University from Florida, was seen in a surveillance video driving against traffic on a one-way street, stopping his car and preventing the abduction of an unidentified female at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Friday, November 20. Cain got out of his SUV and demanded  cash from Gold, who told him he had no cash on him. Cain is seen shooting Gold once in the abdomen. While Gold was writhing on the sidewalk in pain, Cain attempted to shoot him execution style twice in the head, but both times the gun jammed and Cain grabbed the female’s purse and fled the scene.

Gold is listed in guarded, but stable condition at University Hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The female suffered minor injuries, was treated and released shortly after the incident.

An SUV that Cain was driving was prominently feature in the video. After the abandoned SUV was found on Sunday and its owner identified, Cain was named as the primary subject wanted in connection with the attempted kidnapping, attempted murder and armed robbery at a news conference called by New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison.

Police detectives were able to determine that the owner of the van had loaned Cain his vehicle. The house in which Cain and Washington were arrested allegedly belongs to a relative of Cain’s.

Weighing in on the quick arrest, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu expressed his gratitude to law enforcement, who made quick work of bringing in the subject. Landrieu said Cain was dangerous and will “most likely spend the rest of his life in jail.”
