Authorities began opening up the Crescent City Connection and the Causeway to one lane in each direction Thursday as the icy conditions on roads showed some progress in melting.
The 10 inches of snow that fell on Tuesday coupled with freezing temperatures has melted only a portion of the accumulation that has refrozen as slush and in some cases as dangerous black ice that could make travel on elevated bridges and roadways and shaded underpasses difficult to traverse.
Temperatures on Friday and through the weekend are expected to stay above freezing, aiding work crews attempting to plow through the ice that has remained and made travel difficult if not impossible.
Snow plow crews from Indiana have been assisting the City of New Orleans in theie efforts to clear the most heavily traveled portions of the I-10 and major roadways like Canal Street. Work crews around Caesar’s Superdome will resume construction projects today as plans for Super Bowl LIX continue. Travelers using Poydras and other streets around the facility are advised that several lanes of traffic will be obstructed while crews continue their work in the days and weeks prior to the weekend of February 7 – 9.
