Attorney Leonard Washofsky funeral set for today

LEONARD ALVIN WASHOFSKY, an attorney who specialized in labor law, civil rights law, estates and wills, died on Saturday, May 25. He was 82.
Washofsky, who was native of New Orleans native, last resided in Mandeville, LA.

He attended Tulane University as an undergraduate and attained a bachelor’s degree in 1958 from the School of Arts and Sciences before attending the Tulane School of Law, from where he graduated with an L.L.B. degree in 1960. Washofsky was admitted to the Louisiana Bar, the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit, and in 1966 to the U.S. Supreme Court.

He was preceded in death by a first wife, Cecile Washofsky, and is survived by his beloved wife, Victoria G. “Vickie” Washofsky; his children Erin K. Chernow, Ph.D. (Lance), of Atlanta, Beth L. Levine (Brian), of New York City, and Michael D. Washofsky (Stephanie), of Chicago; his step-children Stephanie F. Melancon (Jerry), of Picayune, MS., Joseph F. Fortier (Christie), of Carriere, MS, and Jennifer F. Elwell (Mike), of Covington; the grandfather of six grandchildren, the step-grandfather of four and the step great-grandfather of two.
Masonic rites and funeral services will be conducted today, Monday, May 27, 2019 at 12:00 noon at Congregation Gates of Prayer, 4000 West Esplanade Ave in Metairie. Rabbi David Gerber will conduct the religious service with interment at the Gates of Prayer Cemetery on  Joseph St. will following immediately after the service. 
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are preferred to Congregation Gates of Prayer, the Sisterhood’s Cecile Washofsky Memorial Jacobs Campership Fund, Chabad House Metairie, and the Tulane University School of Law.
