BERTHA FISHER KERN, a community leader who helped found the popular Lagniappe Dining Book, passed away on May 21, 2020. She was 87.
A New Orleans native and lifelong resident the city, she had moved to Baton Rouge since 2009. She was a graduate of the Tulane School of Business Administration.
Along with her best friend Sandy Kahn, she founded Nouvelle Inc., which published the Lagniappe Dining Book that offered discounts for frequent diners. The books were sold to diners from 1979 to 1997 and many area restaurants would extend offers for discounted meals or complimentary menu items through the coupons included.
Kern was past president of the Tikvat Shalom Sisterhood for the synagogue now known as Shir Chadash Conservative Congregation.
She is survived by her daughter Jeanne Kern Poe (Patrick Miller) and Michael Kern (Yukie) of Palo Alto, CA.; two grandchildren, two step-grandchidren and four step-great-grandchildren. A private burial was held by the family with a public memorial to be held at a later date.
