The retreat will be located at the Rosaryville Spirit Life Center in Pontchatoula administered by the Dominican Sisters of Peace. This retreat will allow the 32-member choir to practice as well as to commune with nature and work with each other in other ways, according to Marx. Unlike the similar Manrisa retreat compound, which is only open to men, the Rosaryville complex is open to both men and women. The center’s director, Jay Frey, has been “extraordinarily gracious” in dealing with the dietary needs of choir members as well as preparing the facility for the choir’s arrival including getting a piano turned, according to the cantor.

The idea for the retreat grew out of some early meetings between the new cantor, his choir and music director Terry Maddox. “This is the first time we’ve gone out of the city – to really really retreat from our daily obligations and consider how we engage our music and our role as shlichei tzibbor,” Marx stated when contacted via e-mail. “It should be a lot of fun!”

The Touro Synagogue Adult Choir performs every Friday night from October through May and also has been given additional duties for Erev Roshanah. Marx says four new singers have joined this year and were expected to be a port of the retreat.

The Touro Synagogue Adult Choir has also been planning a concert of Jewish music for October 14 at 4 p.m. at Lambeth House.

[24
8807,510,509
