He was 88.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #181717;\">The cause of death is not yet known.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #181717;\">Maysles, once\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #135c8b;\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2007\/apr\/09\/entertainment\/et-weekmovies9\">called\u00a0<\/a>the \u201cbest American cameraman\u201d by Jean-Luc Godard, was one of the country\u2019s most revered documentarians. Along with his brother David, who died in 1987, he in the late 1950s pioneered the use of lightweight, battery-powered cameras that allowed cameramen to move around\u00a0more easily\u00a0while filming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #181717;\">Besides \u201cGrey Gardens\u201d (1976), a cult classic that explored the lives of relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and \u201cGimme Shelter\u201d (1970), one of the earliest rock documentaries that followed the Rolling Stones on their 1969 tour, Maysles directed documentaries on The Beatles, Marlon Brando and Truman Capote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #181717;\">Born in Boston in 1926 to Eastern European Jewish immigrants, Maysles studied at Syracuse and Boston University.
