{"id":24631,"date":"2015-06-21T17:39:30","date_gmt":"2015-06-21T23:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/?p=24631"},"modified":"2015-08-24T06:57:17","modified_gmt":"2015-08-24T12:57:17","slug":"helen-mirren-honored-for-educating-about-nazi-looted-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/helen-mirren-honored-for-educating-about-nazi-looted-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Helen Mirren honored for educating about Nazi-looted art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(JTA) \u2014 Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren accepted an award for helping to educate the public about the issues surrounding Nazi-looted art.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the World Jewish Congress presented Mirren with its Recognition Award, which honors those working on behalf of the Jewish people, at a ceremony at New York&#8217;s Neue Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Mirren starred in the 2015 film &#8220;Woman in Gold,&#8221; which tells the story of Maria Altmann, an Austrian-American woman who made headlines in 2006 for winning her legal battle against the Austrian government to reclaim five Gustav Klimt paintings, among them the famous \u201cPortrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I,\u201d nicknamed \u201cWoman in Gold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1938, the painting was among the works forced from their rightful owner, Altmann&#8217;s late husband, Ferdinand, because he was Jewish.
