He graduated from Isidore Newman High School at the remarkable age of 15, before entering Tulane University. Mintz graduated from Tulane at age 18, and matriculated to the School of Law, from which he graduated at 21.

Before he committed to a career as an attorney, Mintz did take an additional year of pre-med studies. He joined the Montgomery Barnett Law Firm in 1956 and continued his law practice from his home until he fell ill in February of this year.

Besides being noted as a studious academic, Mintz also excelled in sports. He was a gifted athlete, who especially loved playing tennis. He was crowned the ping-pong champion of New Orleans when he was 21. Mintz is also recalled as a fine dancer, who possessed a remarkably quick wit.

Mintz eventually became a partner of Montgomery, Barnett, Brown, Read, Hammond & Mintz and specialized in business law. His practice included taxation, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, finance, insurance defense and estate planning. He was one of the first accredited Tax Specialist and Estate Planning and Administration Specialists in the city.

He served as a member of the New Orleans, Louisiana and national Bar Associations and was on the New Orleans Bar Association Executive Committee and Ethics Committee; Mintz was a charter member of the Louisiana State Bar Association.

Mintz was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and also was involved with the American Law Institute. Mintz was the chairman of the Civic Affairs Committee and State Legislature Committees of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce.

In the Jewish community, he was heavily involved in numerous civic, religious, and educational organizations such as the Jewish Endowment Fund, the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, the Jewish Community Center, the Touro Infirmary Board of Trustees and the Touro Infirmary Foundation.

While serving with the Touro Infirmary board, Mintz acted as a liaison between its medical staff and the Tulane University School of Medicine. He also helped to facilitate the largest bequest Touro Infirmary has ever received. That gift, given by his client Charles Buckman, eventually became Touro’s Buckman Building.

Mintz was a member of the Board of Directors of Temple Sinai and an annual supporter of the Institute of Southern Jewish Life in Jackson, MS.

He was a co-chairman of the Summer Lyric Theatre at Tulane University Board and also served on numerous Tulane Law School boards. Mintz was a charter member of the Louisiana Historical Society.

Among his many accolades were his recognition as a citizen “Role Model” in 2003 by the Young Leadership Council. He was a recipient of the Judah Touro Society Award in 1999 and was honored by the New Orleans and Louisiana Bar Associations for his 50th year of practice in 2001, the same year Tulane University named him its Outstanding Alumnus of 1951. The Law School also honored him as its Outstanding Volunteer of the Year.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Linda Barnett Mintz, his son John Mintz, his daughter Margaret Mintz-Easthope (Thomas), brother-in-law Sydney Besthoff, sisters-in-law Walda Barnett Besthoff and Jean Mintz of Houston and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Tulane Law School, Summer Lyric Theatre at Tulane University, the Touro Infirmary Foundation or The Jewish Endowment Fund.

A memorial service was conducted by Rabbi Edward Paul Cohn on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary at Temple Sinai, 6227 St. Charles Avenue.
