(Courtesy Dahlia Topolosky)

“We did it for two years at the Uptown JCC, which was wonderful,” she said. “We’re looking to do some changes (relocating) at Beth Israel.” The new Beth Israel synagogue and community center is located at 4004 West Esplanade Avenue in Metairie.

Aside from the change in meeting space, the number of parents participating will be more limited. “We’re trying to keep it smaller to maintain the cohesiveness of the group and make it more consistent,” Topolosky elaborated. “We want more consistency in order to have a more effective group.”

In the past parents could attend whatever sessions they desired with no specific commitment. “This year we want people to commit to each class. Each class plays off the next one with each having a specific parenting goal,” she continued. Some examples of topics include how to deal with tantrums, effective disciplinary techniques and how to cope with sibling rivalry.

“They can enhance their parenting skills and enhance their relationship with their kids,” Topolosky continued. “It’s also an opportunity for parents to socialize, meet other parents and have support. Everyone goes through the same ups and downs of parenting.”

To ensure the continued success of the program this year, JFS sought and received a grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans. JFS executive director Deena Gerber confirmed receipt of that grant.

The sessions will be offered in two parts. Part one will be starting after the Succot holiday on Thursday, October 11 and and continuing on Thursdays through January. Sessions run from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Part two sessions will run from February through May.

Parents with young children up to three-year-olds may attend the courses knowing that babysitting services will be provided.

Topolosky credited former JFS staff member Susie Lazarus with helping originally draft the program three years ago. They both saw the need for a program to be implemented where parents could get specific help in an environment that was judgment free.

“Oftentimes parents don’t have time to get support. The New Orleans Parents Club is a great way to meet other parents in a stigma-free, no judgmental environment,” she said.

Each parent is also entitled to one private coaching session with Topolosky as part of the course. These sessions can be held in person or over the telephone to accommodate the schedules of busy working parents.

Topolosky emphasized that she offers similar private coaching sessions as part of her work with JFS and that membership in NOPC is not a requirement. Each session is typically designed to cover one specific issue. Some examples of common issues include children having trouble transitioning from school to home, getting them to go to sleep or dealing with angry or disrespectful children or teens.

Coaching sessions may be secured on an individual session or multi-session basis and are available in 50-minute or 30-minute increments, Topolosky pointed out. Telephone coaching sessions cost slightly less than the in person coaching sessions.

NOPC membership is $200 for the nine group sessions and single coaching session. If requested, they can be provided on a sliding scale basis and are open to the whole community. To register for the NOPC or coaching sessions call Topolosky at 504-345-9919 or JFS at 504-831-8475 x.120. To register online for the NOPC or to arrange coaching session packages, click here.

“When you enhance your parenting skills and how you respond and react to a child, that affects the child’s behavior and betters your relationship,” she concluded.

[3
549,8790,8814,8795,8788,762,763
