She was 89. Slater was highly regarded by the Houma community and also noted as a member of the New Orleans Chapter of Hadassah.

A lover of animals – in particular Irish Setters – and a passionate gardener, Schild was remembered for her special ability to relate to nature. Family members recall that she had three birdbaths in her backyard and that she especially reveled in being able to recognize all different species of birds, plants and trees.

Yet, the highest position she believed she could attain was that of a loving mother and caring wife. Extraordinarily committed to keeping a kosher home in Houma, she arranged for kosher meat to be shipped from out of state, preserved with dry ice. After defrosting the meat, she salted it while her children played games with the dry ice.

She frequently drove her children to Beth Israel Religious School on Sunday mornings. Her annual kosher Thanksgiving Day feast was accented with a famous, delicious stuffing that had all clamoring for the recipe.

A longtime member of Congregation Beth Israel, she was born in New Orleans in December of 1922. While working during World War II for the Maritime Commission, she met Harry A. Slater at a USO dance. After a hurried romance, the two of them were married and maintained a residence in Houma for 63 years.

Following her husband’s passing in 2006, Slater stayed in Houma, but moved to Atlanta in the wake of Hurricane Gustav in order to be closer to other family members. While in Atlanta she took up residence at the William Breman Jewish Home and continued her attachment to Judaism there.

Schild is survived by son Larry Slater (Sue), daughters Rickie Charvat (Jim) and Madeline Edelman (Bill), sister Dena Grennell, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Old Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery, 4221 Frenchmen Street, with Rabbi Uri Topolosky officiating.

[19
