{"id":28046,"date":"2016-01-14T08:58:08","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T14:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/?p=28046"},"modified":"2016-01-14T08:58:08","modified_gmt":"2016-01-14T14:58:08","slug":"al-jazeera-america-to-stop-broadcasting-by-end-of-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/al-jazeera-america-to-stop-broadcasting-by-end-of-april\/","title":{"rendered":"Al Jazeera America to stop broadcasting by end of April"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (JTA) \u2014 Al Jazeera America, the New York offshoot of the Qatar-based Arabic TV news channel, will shut down by the end of April.<\/p>\n<p>The demise of the channel, which was sued last year by former employees accusing it of anti-Semitism and sexism, was announced at a staff meeting Wednesday, according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera America\u2019s business model \u201cis simply not sustainable in light of the economic challenges in the U.S. media marketplace,\u201d Al Jazeera CEO Al Anstey said in a staff memo, the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>Although the channel is closing, Anstey said Al Jazeera would nonetheless expand its online presence in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The channel launched in August 2013.<\/p>\n<p>A lawsuit filed in June by Al Jazeera America\u2019s former senior vice president of programming and documentaries claimed the channel \u201cfavored its Arabic and male employees, treating its non-Arabic female employees as second-class citizens.\u201d Shannon High-Bassalik also claimed the network, which purports to be objective, set aside truth for its \u201cpro-Arabic prejudices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a lawsuit filed two months earlier in New York State Supreme Court, an employee alleged that he was fired 10 days after complaining about the behavior of his supervisor.
