That\u2019s the hope of this film,\u201d he\u00a0said while accepting the first win for Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSon of Saul,\u201d which was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jta.org\/2016\/02\/02\/news-opinion\/world\/son-of-saul-for-claims-conference-oscar-nominee-was-a-big-gamble\" target=\"_blank\">partly financed by the Claims Conference<\/a>,\u00a0is\u00a0the second straight Holocaust film to win in the foreign category.\u00a0In 2015, the film \u201cIda,\u201d about a young soon-to-be nun who learns her parents were Jews killed during the World War II,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jta.org\/2015\/02\/22\/arts-entertainment\/ida-about-holocaust-survivor-wins-best-foreign-film\" target=\"_blank\">won for Poland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Set in Auschwitz in 1944, \u201cSon of Saul\u201d tells the story of Saul Auslander, a Jewish inmate forced to escort his fellow prisoners to the gas chambers and help to dispose of their remains. The title role is played by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jta.org\/2016\/02\/18\/arts-entertainment\/whats-behind-the-dark-charisma-of-son-of-saul-star-geza-rohrig\" target=\"_blank\">Geza Rohrig<\/a>, a Hungarian poet and observant Jew who now lives in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The film was heavily favored to win on Sunday, having already claimed the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in May and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jta.org\/2016\/01\/11\/arts-entertainment\/hungarian-holocaust-movie-son-of-saul-wins-golden-globe\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Globe<\/a> for best foreign film\u00a0in January.
