These craven foes who callously kill and maim also remind us that we pay a great price for our freedom.

What we find most reprehensible is that these attacks are not launched in a conventional manner against the armed forces of NATO or the United States.

Instead, those that are targeted are innocents moving about on their way to their respective jobs or shopping in markets. Such was the case in Paris last year and in Mumbai in 2004. In the case of the Boston Marathon bombings, sports enthusiasts were targeted for death and destruction through the use of pressure cooker bombs fitted with nails and ball bearings intended to do maximum harm to bystanders.

The members of Daesh have claimed responsibility for these latest attacks, which have killed at least 31 people and injured nearly 200 others. Their hope was to disillusion those that live in an open society, making them fearful of venturing out and living their lives. The rapid response by the Brussels police has served to ensure that the message the terrorists receive back is one of intolerance towards such violent acts and to impress them with the lesson that violence will be met will a resolve to find and punish those responsible.

In the end all the terrorists have accomplished is to breed distrust and enmity for their cause and to create new martyrs, who will serve as examples of those paying the ultimate sacrifice for having chosen to live in a society that is truly free and beyond the imposition of religious fanaticism.

Brussels has been victimized before. In 2014 the Jewish Museum was attacked and four people were killed, three of whom were foreign nationals from Israel and France. After he was arrested, the assailant was also identified as a member of the Daesh terrorist group. In San Bernardino in December, two adherents of Daesh were accused of killing 14 people and injuring 22 others there. Many of those victims were disabled and special needs students. Once again, the decision was made to target those who could not adequately defend themselves.

We hope that justice will prevail and that the authorities will muster all their available forces and find those responsible for these latest attacks as soon as possible. Only with a united front expressing our disgust for these terrible misdeeds and our continued vigilance in opposition to terrorism will we ever see a lessening of disturbing attacks such as these.

[22
4553,8790,8795,8788
