Finkel, who performed under his self-generated stage name, was known for his comical sad sack face that always seemed to elicit laughter. He began his career in the then burgeoning Yiddish theater while only nine years old. His career rode the crest of the declining wave of the many Yiddish theaters that made up the theatre experience frequented by immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe. At the time of his birth, the Johnson-Reed Act radically reduced the number of foreigners welcomed to the U.S., based on their national origins.

With the tide of new immigrants reduced and through assimilation to American culture, many Jews turned away from the rich Yiddish culture. Undeterred, Finkel advanced in a career that eventually earned him a star on the Yiddish Walk of Fame in New York at the advanced age of 75.

Finkel’s performance as an acerbic waiter in “Cafe Royale” got him noticed in 1988 and he went on to win an Obie Award as a featured actor. That led to his casting as a lawyer in Sidney Lumet’s drama “Q&A.” The suit of the blustery lawyer seemed to fit him well as writer and showrunner David Kelley tapped Finkel for a major recurring role for his TV series “Picket Fences,” which ran for four years on CBS from 1992-1996. Finkel won an Emmy Award for his role in 1994 and later played Harvey Lipschultz, a history teacher in Kelley’s other series “Boston Public,” which also lasted for four years until it was cancelled mid-season in 2004.

Finkel was also featured in the opening of the 2009 Coen Brothers film “A Serious Man.”

Born in Brooklyn in 1922, Phil Finkel lived his entire life in New York and took on the moniker of Fyvush as a young performer. It was a name he cherished to as he traveled down to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh or smaller towns along the Eastern seaboard. He frequently made his way into the Catskills to perform at the many resorts there.

In recent years, Finkel had taken on the role of preserving the history of the Yiddish theatre by organizing several different shows that chronicled its rich past.

Finkel was a featured performer in the original Broadway cast of “Fiddler on the Roof” that ran from 1964-1972. Later he played increasingly larger roles in the 1981 revival first as Mordcha, the innkeeper and later as Lazar Wolf, the butcher. Finally, Finkel landed the leading role of Tevye during the national tour.

Finkel was widowed in 2008 with the death of his wife, Gertrude (née Lieberman), with whom he was married for more than six decades. He is survived by his two gifted musician sons Ian and Eliot and a brother Nat.

[19
8024,8790,8795,8788,163,1569
