(JTA) \u2014 \u201cThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,\u201d one of the most thoroughly Jewish shows on television, capitalized on its strong reviews by earning a Golden Globe nomination for best television series, musical or comedy.<\/p>\n

The Amazon Studios sitcom created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the Jewish writer who is best known for the early 2000s hit \u201cGilmore Girls,\u201d follows a 1950s Jewish housewife who becomes a standup comedian. JTA said back in March<\/a> that the show \u201cmakes the characters\u2019 Jewishness an integral \u2014 but not overdone \u2014 part of their identities.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Sherman-Palladino was far from the only Jewish star nominated for a Golden Globe on Monday. Here are the rest of the nominees.<\/p>\n

Steven Spielberg<\/strong> \u2014 best director, motion picture<\/em><\/p>\n

The Jewish icon\u2019s latest film is the Watergate-era journalism drama \u201cThe Post,\u201d which stars Meryl Streep as Kay Graham, the first female publisher of The Washington Post.<\/p>\n

Daniel Day-Lewis<\/strong> \u2014 best performance by an actor in a motion picture, drama<\/em><\/p>\n

The three-time Oscar winner, whose mother was Jewish, stars in director Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s latest feature, \u201cPhantom Thread.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ansel Elgort<\/strong> \u2014 best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy<\/em><\/p>\n

The baby-faced 23-year-old is nominated for his star turn in the heist flick \u201cBaby Driver.\u201d His father is Jewish and his maternal grandmother spent time in a concentration camp for helping smuggle Norwegian-Jewish children out of the hands of Nazis.<\/p>\n

Alison Brie<\/strong> \u2014 best performance by an actress in a television series, musical or comedy<\/em><\/p>\n

Brie, who has a Jewish mother (and started her acting career at a California JCC<\/a>), charmed viewers in her role on Netflix\u2019s \u201cGlow,\u201d which dramatizes the creation of a women\u2019s wrestling show in the \u201980s.<\/p>\n

James Franco<\/strong> \u2014 best performance by an actor in a motion picture, drama<\/em><\/p>\n

The perennial Jewish star\u2019s latest role is Tommy Wiseau, who directed \u201cThe Room\u201d \u2014 deemed<\/a> by many as the worst film ever made. Franco also directed and produced the film-about-a-film \u201cThe Disaster Artist,\u201d which was nominated for best motion picture, musical or comedy.<\/p>\n

Maggie Gyllenhaal<\/strong> \u2014 best performance by an actress in a television series, drama<\/em><\/p>\n

The Golden Globe winner starred in \u201cThe Deuce,\u201d an HBO series about the porn industry in 1970s New York City written by Jewish filmmaker David Simon.<\/p>\n

Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong> \u2014 best performance by an actor in a motion picture, drama<\/em><\/p>\n

This 21-year-old, born to a French father and Jewish-American mother, is nominated for his role in \u201cCall Me by Your Name,\u201d which follows a gay love affair. It\u2019s a big year for the youngster: He also appeared in \u201cLady Bird,\u201d which garnered multiple Golden Globe nominations.<\/p>\n

Pamela Adlon<\/strong> \u2014 best performance by an actress in a television series, musical or comedy<\/em><\/p>\n

The Jewish actress, also known for her work writing and acting in the embattled comedian Louis C.K.\u2019s FX show \u201cLouie,\u201d was nominated for work on her own show, \u201cBetter Things\u201d (which she co-created with Louis C.K.).<\/p>\n

Liev Schreiber<\/strong> \u2014 best performance by an actor in a television series, drama<\/em><\/p>\n

This is the fourth year in a row that the brawny actor has earned a nomination for his role on the crime drama \u201cRay Donovan.\u201d He talked to JTA<\/a> earlier this year about how his Jewish grandfather inspires him.<\/p>\n

Aaron Sorkin<\/strong> \u2014 best screenplay, motion picture<\/em><\/p>\n

The Oscar winner is nominated for his screenplay, but also makes his directorial debut in \u201cMolly\u2019s Game,\u201d based on a memoir by Molly Bloom, who held underground poker games for Hollywood\u2019s elite.<\/p>\n

Josh Singer<\/strong> \u2014 best screenplay, motion picture<\/em><\/p>\n

The Jewish screenwriter is nominated for co-writing the script for Spielberg\u2019s \u201cThe Post\u201d with Liz Hannah. He earned an Oscar for co-writing \u201cSpotlight,\u201d the last journalism-themed film to win big on the awards circuit, in 2015.<\/p>\n

Hans Zimmer<\/strong> \u2014 best original score, motion picture<\/em><\/p>\n

This is business as usual for the film-scoring titan, who has won multiple Golden Globes, multiple Grammys and an Academy Award. This year he is nominated for his score for \u201cDunkirk,\u201d director Christopher Nolan\u2019s epic about the World War II battle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
