{"id":42878,"date":"2018-05-08T15:47:53","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T21:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/?p=42878"},"modified":"2018-05-08T15:47:53","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T21:47:53","slug":"french-director-jean-luc-godard-among-dozens-of-film-professionals-to-boycott-israel-cinema-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/french-director-jean-luc-godard-among-dozens-of-film-professionals-to-boycott-israel-cinema-event\/","title":{"rendered":"French director Jean-Luc Godard among dozens of film professionals to boycott Israel cinema event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(JTA) \u2013 The French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard joined dozens of other film-industry professionals from France who vowed to boycott an event celebrating Israeli cinema.<\/p>\n<p>Godard, a pioneer of the 1960s New Wave cinema and an avowed Marxist who has fought accusations of anti-Semitism, added his name to a May 4 petition calling for a boycott of the France-Israel Season event by the Institut Francais. The state-run organization for furthering French culture abroad&nbsp;scheduled next month\u2019s event in cooperation with Israeli government officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPosing as an event for cultural exchange,\u201d the petition reads, \u201cthis effort is meant to boost Israeli reparation, tarnished by its increasingly hard-handed policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Bureau for Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism on Tuesday accused the cosignatories of \u201ctrying to discriminate against the only Jewish democratic state\u201d while \u201cstaying blind, deaf and mute when it comes to Palestinian anti-Semitic culture in which theaters, cinemas, music are used to propagate this hatred in schools\u201d in the West Bank and Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Godard, the maker of \u201cBreathless,\u201d the petition also was signed by Eyal Sivan, an Israel-born director who in 2001, amid anti-Semitic assaults in France, said that \u201cJewish Agency agents have one way of increasing aliyah: Burning synagogues.\u201d He also said Jews in France were paying the price for \u201cthe colonial and murderous situation that has prevailed for more than fifty years in Israel-Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The philosopher Alain Finkielkraut called Sivan a \u201cJewish anti-Semite,\u201d leading the director to sue Finkielkraut for libel. Sivan lost the trial. In 2013, Eyal said that \u201cZionism runs France.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Godard has faced accusations of anti-Semitism in France. He has denied this allegation, stating his father was anti-Semitic but he is merely anti-Zionist<\/p>\n<p>Godard worked in 1970 on a film titled \u201cUntil Victory,\u201d depicting the \u201cPalestinian struggle for independence,\u201d partially bankrolled by the Arab League. It was never completed.
