Born in Ukraine, he left Kiev with both of his parents in 1979 and became an American citizen in 1984. After settling in New Orleans, he attended the University of New Orleans and graduated first with a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree in Medical Statistics. He worked on the Bogalusa Heart Study as an employee at LSU School of Medicine under Dr. Gerald Berenson.

Vizelberg was a man of many talents. He worked in purchasing and delivery management in conjunction with his firm. He was fluent in Russian and Ukrainian and often served as a translator in the legal, medical, petrochemical, and shipping fields.

A lover of soccer, he was an unofficial team statistician for his son’s team, the Lafreniere Gamblers, a team that won numerous state championships. A man of fine wit and laughable humor, Igor demonstrated that talent when he performed comedy routines and played guitars at a number of local venues including the Neutral Ground Coffee House.

Because many of his family members had died during the Holocaust, Vizelberg was very involved with tracing the ancestry of his family through genealogy.

Igor is survived by his wife of 27 years, Heidi Graubarth Vizelberg; his mother, Anna Bat Vizelberg, and his son, Maxbetter Solomon Vizelberg,

Funeral services were conducted by Rabbi David Gerber on Sunday, October 21 at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd. in Metairie at 2:00 p.m. Burial followed at the Joseph Street Cemetery, 1428 Joseph St. in New Orleans.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Vizelberg’s name to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Research in Woodbury, New York or by phone at 516-737-1550. Donations can also be made to Congregation Gates of Prayer’s Tikkun Olam Fund for the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter.

A minyan is scheduled to take place on both Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. and on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Michelle Horton in Metairie

Condolences may be expressed online at www.tharpsontheimerfh.com.
