{"id":47218,"date":"2019-02-03T17:46:07","date_gmt":"2019-02-03T23:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/?p=47218"},"modified":"2019-02-03T17:46:07","modified_gmt":"2019-02-03T23:46:07","slug":"jussie-smollett-appears-on-stage-days-after-apparent-hate-crime-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/jussie-smollett-appears-on-stage-days-after-apparent-hate-crime-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Jussie Smollett appears on stage days after apparent hate crime attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(JTA) \u2014 Jussie Smollett told an audience in southern California that he is \u201cgoing to stand strong with y\u2019all\u201d in the wake of an assault that is being characterized as a hate crime.<\/p>\n<p>Smollet, who is black, gay and Jewish, took the stage Saturday night at the Troubadour in West Hollywood in his first public appearance since the Tuesday night attack in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing I can say is \u2018thank you so much, and I\u2019m OK,\u2019\u201d Smollett, best known for his work on the show \u201cEmpire,\u201d&nbsp;said from the stage, the Associated Press reported. He said that he is not fully healed yet.<\/p>\n<p>Smollett, the son of a Jewish father and African-American mother, was exiting a restaurant when two men approached him. The Chicago Police Department&nbsp;reported&nbsp;they \u201cgained his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him.\u201d They then proceeded to attack Smollett, pouring an \u201cunknown chemical substance\u201d on him and wrapping a rope around his neck.<br \/>\nSmollet\u2019s family had urged him to cancel the concert. \u201cI had to be here tonight, y\u2019all. I couldn\u2019t let those (expletives) win,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The actor and R&amp;B singer made his first public comments about the attack on Friday, responding to social media accusations that he had changed his story to police several times.
