{"id":47418,"date":"2019-02-22T08:16:43","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T14:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/?p=47418"},"modified":"2019-02-24T20:51:47","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T02:51:47","slug":"jessie-smollett-arrested-charged-with-falsely-reporting-hate-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/jessie-smollett-arrested-charged-with-falsely-reporting-hate-crime\/","title":{"rendered":"Jussie Smollett arrested, charged with falsely reporting hate crime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(JTA) \u2014 Jussie Smollett was charged with a felony for making a false police report in which the \u201cEmpire\u201d actor said he was the victim of a hate attack last month in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Smollett, who is black, Jewish and gay, was charged Wednesday with felony disorder conduct, which carries a prison sentence of up to three years and could require him to repay police for the cost of the investigation. That could run to hundreds of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Smollett was taken into police custody on Thursday morning in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Fox Entertainment has said it is not cutting Smollett\u2019s openly gay character, Jamal Lyon, on \u201cEmpire.\u201d&nbsp;Deadline Hollywood reported&nbsp;Wednesday, however, that there are rumors the character\u2019s scenes have been trimmed or cut in the episodes being filmed and the network is considering suspending Smollett from the show or putting him on some form of leave.<\/p>\n<p>Police believe Smollett paid two Nigerian brothers to stage the Jan. 29 attack in downtown Chicago. The brothers, one who appears in \u201cEmpire,\u201d testified Wednesday before a grand jury.<\/p>\n<p>Smollett has denied involvement in the assault in which he told police that two men \u201cgained his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him\u201d before attacking, pouring an \u201cunknown chemical substance\u201d on him and wrapping a rope around his neck.
