{"id":50587,"date":"2019-08-29T22:06:11","date_gmt":"2019-08-30T04:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/?p=50587"},"modified":"2019-08-30T08:55:39","modified_gmt":"2019-08-30T14:55:39","slug":"tulane-student-18-victim-of-suicide-identified","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/tulane-student-18-victim-of-suicide-identified\/","title":{"rendered":"Tulane student, 18, victim of suicide identified"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Jewish Tulane freshman identified as Jake Vandercar, 18, was confirmed as a victim of suicide by Tulane University president Mike Fitts on Thursday, August 29, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to the news site for the campus newspaper,&nbsp; <em>The Tulane Hullabaloo<\/em>, Vandercar, a resident of the hamlet of Bedford Hills in New Bedford, New York, was a student living in Sharp Hall where the incident occurred. Emergency medical team members dispatched to an emergency call there found Vandercar unresponsive and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p>Vandercar is the son of Eric Vandercar, who was one of six people killed in the Vahhalla train crash four years ago on February 3, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>President Fitts notified the Tulane community of the death in an email sent during the afternoon of the incident. \u201cThough he was a member of the Tulane family for only a brief time, Jake touched the lives of many on our campus,\u201d&nbsp;Fitts wrote. \u201cHis loss is a devastating blow as we begin the new academic year.
