{"id":57343,"date":"2020-10-08T14:01:10","date_gmt":"2020-10-08T20:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/?p=57343"},"modified":"2020-10-08T14:01:10","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T20:01:10","slug":"jewish-poet-louise-gluck-wins-nobel-prize-in-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/jewish-poet-louise-gluck-wins-nobel-prize-in-literature\/","title":{"rendered":"Jewish poet Louise Gluck wins Nobel Prize in Literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(JTA) \u2014 Louise Gluck, the American granddaughter of Hungarian Jews, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Gluck, 77, was awarded \u201cfor her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal,\u201d the Nobel committee wrote in its announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Her collections of poetry \u2014 which explore broad and painful topics, such as family life, trauma and aging \u2014 include the books \u201cThe Wild Iris,\u201d \u201cMeadowlands,\u201d \u201cThe Triumph of Achilles\u201d and \u201cArarat.\u201d For \u201cThe Wild Iris\u201d she was awarded the 1993 Pulitzer Prize in poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Born in New York in 1943, Gluck would go on to become the United States\u2019 poet laureate in 2003 and receive a National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama in 2015.<br \/>\nGluck\u2019s paternal Jewish grandparents owned a grocery after settling in New York City.
