GENE FENDLER, an accomplished attorney and experienced pilot, was killed in a single-engine plane crash at Slidell Airport on Oct. 21. He was 73.

Fendler, who was the managing partner of the law firm Liskow and Lewis from 2003 to 2009, was the co-owner of the airplane. Identification of the body was difficult due to the damage from flames associated with the crash. The St. Tammany coroner was not able to identify the remains found in the craft right away. Despite that, Fendler’s car was found at the airport and the co-owner of the craft notified the news media that he believed Fendler was behind the wheel when the craft went down.

Reports of the crash were received after 6 p.m., but investigators arriving on the scene suggested it may have gone down as early as four hours prior.

The Federal Aviation Agency has taken over the investigation of the crash.

Fendler was named a distinguished alumnus of the year last year by the LSU Law Center. He graduated at the top of his law school class in 1973 and was laso the editor-in-chief of the Louisiana Law Review.

He worked as a clerk for U.S. District Judge Alvin B. Rubin before beginning a more than 45-year career with Liskow and Lewis.

A former president of Temple Sinai, Fendler had planned to retire later in the year, according to news reports.

He was predeceased by his son Ben Fendler and is survived by his wife Linda, his two daughters Julia Denzl (Nico) and Abby Barker (Billie) and two grandchildren.

A memorial service in Fendler’s honor will be held at a future unspecified date, according to Temple Sinai.
