But despite the lack of details surrounding the ceremony, it\u2019s still taking place, and as usual, several Jewish artists made the nominations list, which was announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Ranging all the way from the sister rock band Haim to comedian Tiffany Haddish, these are the Jewish artists who made the biggest impact on the recording industry this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The big awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leading the way are the Jewish Haim sisters \u2014 Alana, Danielle, and Este \u2014 who are nominated for album of the year for \u201cWomen in Music Pt. III,\u201d and for best rock performance for their song \u201cThe Steps.\u201d The album, which is their third, was released in June to rave reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Antonoff \u2014 the Jewish musician who has become a go-to producer for some of the industry\u2019s biggest pop stars and often wears a Star of David in public \u2014 is up for producer of the year, for his recent work with Taylor Swift, The Chicks (formerly the Dixie Chicks), FKA Twigs and Sia. (Photo by Alan Smason)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Also nominated for producer of the year is Jewish musician Dan Auerbach, the frontman for the rock band The Black Keys, for his work on music by CeeLo Green, Early James, Marcus King and others. His father is of Polish Jewish heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Breakout Jewish rapper Doja Cat (real name Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini) had a standout 2020 after going viral on TikTok and is nominated for best new artist. Her hit song \u201cSay So\u201d also received nominations for record of the year and best solo pop performance. She was born to a Jewish mother and non-Jewish South African father in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jewish comedians, of course<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two Jewish comedians are up for best comedy album: Jerry Seinfeld for \u201c23 Hours to Kill\u201d and Tiffany Haddish for \u201cBlack Mitzvah.\u201d Haddish celebrated her bat mitzvah on the same day the Netflix special premiered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I came up with the concept for my special,\u201d Haddish explained to Alma, \u201cI was trying to figure out a way to tell my truth, my experiences in life, and also maybe open other people\u2019s eyes to the fact that in African American culture, there is nothing that says, \u2018Okay, you\u2019re officially a woman,\u2019 or, \u2018You\u2019re officially a man.\u2019 There\u2019s no ceremony. There\u2019s no rite of passage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Musicals and movies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stephen Schwartz\u2019s West End adaptation of \u201cThe Prince of Egypt\u201d received a nod for best musical theater album. The recording was released shortly before Passover, fitting for a production that tells the tale of Moses and the Exodus story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of times you put stuff out there and don\u2019t know how it\u2019s being received. So if people have found something inspiring or comforting, there\u2019s just no greater gift a writer can ask for,\u201d Schwartz told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Schwartz will be competing against a Jewish superstar pair: Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. The new off-Broadway cast recording of composer Menken and lyricist Ashman\u2019s \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d was also recognized in the musical category. The two of them also worked on \u201cThe Little Mermaid,\u201d \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d and \u201cAladdin.\u201d Ashman passed away in 1991 at age 40.<\/p>\n<p>In the film soundtrack category, Jewish composer Thomas Newman received a nomination for his score for \u201c1917.\u201d If he wins, this would be Newman\u2019s seventh Grammy. \u201cJojo Rabbit,\u201d the Taika Waititi-led Holocaust satire, received a nomination in best compilation soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>For best music film, Spike Jonze\u2019s \u201cBeastie Boys Story\u201d received a nomination. It\u2019s a documentary that premiered on Apple TV earlier this year telling the tale of the pioneering rap group \u2014 whose three members were all Jewish. Jonze, known for directing the movies \u201cHer\u201d and \u201cWhere the Wild Things Are,\u201d is also Jewish.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beastie Boys Story \u2014 Official Trailer | Apple TV+\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZCyqR2RXoQU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And while superstar Beyonc\u00e9 is not Jewish her visual film \u201cBlack Is King,\u201d which adapts the story of Moses, also received a nomination in that category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An orchestral Anne Frank adaptation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nominated for best classical compendium is an orchestral adaptation of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/michael-tilson-thomas-conducts-from-the-diary-of-anne-frank-in-s-f\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Diary of Anne Frank,\u201d narrated by Isabel Leonard and conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra<\/a>.
