{"id":5922,"date":"2013-03-13T21:48:34","date_gmt":"2013-03-14T03:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/?p=5922"},"modified":"2013-03-13T21:48:34","modified_gmt":"2013-03-14T03:48:34","slug":"retract-zionism-slur-u-s-lawmakers-urge-turkeys-erdogan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/retract-zionism-slur-u-s-lawmakers-urge-turkeys-erdogan\/","title":{"rendered":"Retract Zionism slur, U.S. lawmakers urge Turkey&#8217;s Erdogan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ASHINGTON (JTA) \u2013 Eighty-nine members of the U.S. Congress signed a letter calling on Turkey&#8217;s prime minister to retract his comments blasting Zionism.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers, representing both houses of Congress and both political parties, sent the one-page letter to Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday to express \u201cour grave disappointment with the statement you made at the United Nations-sponsored conference in Vienna last month equating Zionism &#8212; the foundation of the Jewish state and the movement for Jewish self-determination &#8212; with fascism and anti-Semitism, and labeling it a \u2018crime against humanity.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY), who signed the letter, in a statement sent to JTA said Erdogan&#8217;s \u201coutlandish comment is simply unacceptable\u201d and &#8220;further threatens unrest in an already perilous region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another signer, Sen.
