Chuck Schumer, died Wednesday in a Long Island hospital after recently undergoing surgery for heart problems. Schumer remembered his father as a hard-working member of the \u201cgreatest generation\u201d in a tweet Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn so many ways\u2014he personified the greatest generation. He took whatever was thrown at him no matter how difficult, did his job, never complained. An amazing husband, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent. We love him &amp; will miss him,\u201d Schumer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Abraham Schumer was born in 1923 and grew up in Utica, New York. He served as a radar operator in the Pacific during World War II and later took over his family\u2019s exterminating business in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My dad, Abe, is 98 years old. And I\u2019m thankful for all he\u2019s done for our country and our family. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/VeteransDay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#VeteransDay<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jUhJZ1m5ww\">pic.twitter.com\/jUhJZ1m5ww<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/1458930993155481608?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 11, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The younger Schumer remember his father pacing the floor of the family\u2019s home early Monday mornings because he dreaded going to work at the start of the week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe struggled his whole life\u2026my brother and sister and I would hear him at 2 am\u2026Sunday night, pacing the floor because he hated going to work,\u201d Schumer told James Corden in March after his parents received the coronavirus vaccines and reunited with their great-grandson.<\/p>\n<p>But Schumer said his father was happy once he retired and happiest of all when he was with his great-grandson: \u201cBut then he retired and then he became a happy guy. And you know, the greatest joy in his life is his great-grandson. For a year he couldn\u2019t see him, then they got the shots, they\u2019re over 85, and for the first time he saw him on Sunday \u2014 what a joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schumer and his wife, Selma, had two sons and a daughter. Sen. Schumer is their oldest son.<br \/>\nAt a news conference this week, Sen. Schumer told the story of his own birth on Thanksgiving Day 1950.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they used to do in those days \u2014 there was none of this spouse in the delivery room, touchy feely \u2014 they sent the husbands down to a room, they paced and smoked cigars and waited for the blessed event,\u201d Schumer said, according to the New York Daily News.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, his father decided to step out of the hospital to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was happening just a few blocks away.
