An athlete and devoted sports fan throughout his life, Buckman had a special affection for the University of North Carolina Tarheels.

Buckman earned an undergraduate degree from Tulane University in 1965 and followed it up quickly with a juris doctor degree from the Tulane School of Law in 1968. However, he developed a love-hate relationship with the practice of law. While dating his soon-to-be wife Kathy Latter, he became interested in real estate. After marrying, he moved up the corporate ladder at Latter & Blum to ascend to the presidency there for many years. For a short time he also had a return to practicing law before working again in real estate in 1994 after a move to Raleigh, North Carolina.

While in North Carolina, he ran the Foundation for the Raleigh-Cary Jewish Federation. He returned to New Orleans in 2006.

He was married for 51 years to his wife Kathy, who survives him along with their three children, Brian, Shepard, and Ellen.

Buckman was a talented sculptor and loved African art. He also meticulously maintained his garden and tinkered in his workshop at home.

A devoted supporter of the Jewish community, Dick served as the president of Temple Sinai from 1985 to 1987. As a leader in the New Orleans Jewish Federation, Buckman led missions to Israel and served as a Lemann-Stern advisor. He also volunteered at Touro Infirmary with stroke patients.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Kathy Latter Buckman, his children Brian (Cathy Kolcun), Shepard (Michele), and Ellen; and three grandchildren.

A private graveside service was held on Wed., August 31, at Hebrew Rest Cemetery with Rabbi Daniel Sherman presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory are suggested to Touro Infirmary or Temple Sinai.

[19
2414,8790,12516,8788,3552,12515
