--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/283;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76592 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Symbols_of_Rosh_Hashana.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Symbols_of_Rosh_Hashana.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.crescentcityjewishnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Symbols_of_Rosh_Hashana-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Why do we eat apples and honey?&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">It\u2019s an answer you all need to hear.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Like the honey, the apples are sweet&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;To ensure for us all a sweet year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">But that&#8217;s not all of the foods<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">That we eat at the head of the year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">While&nbsp;<i>simanim<\/i>&nbsp;are ritually eaten,<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Their meaning is not always clear.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">So, let us start with Rosh Hashanah<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">If that is what you would wish.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Rosh is the word meaning &#8220;head.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">That&#8217;s the reason for the head of a fish.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Symbolically, we often eat dates.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>T&#8217;marim<\/em> is the word in Hebrew.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The letters suggest the word &#8220;end&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Of bad things that make us feel blue.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Even the challah we eat at our meals<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Is round, not oval, for a reason.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">It reminds us that a year, like a circle,<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Continues from season to season.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Now pomegranates, that is a mouthful.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The rabbis say each of those seeds<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Is an opportunity to do mitzvahs \u2013<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">What we all know as doing good deeds.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">In Yiddish the word <i>meren&nbsp;<\/i>means two things<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">It means increase, but it also means carrots.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">So we eat carrots in the hope that this new year<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Will see increase in our worth and our merits.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The last item on the menu is your selection<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The&nbsp;<i>pri chadash<\/i>&nbsp;or &#8220;new fruit&#8221;
