(Photo by Amos Ben-Gershom\/GPO)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The official state ceremony, held under the theme \u201cOut of the Depths: The Pain of Liberation and Growth,\u201d included speeches by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli President Isaac Herzog.<\/p>\n<p>Other attendees included Cabinet ministers, the heads of the security establishment, Supreme Court justices and other government officials, as well as Hamas captivity survivor Alexander \u201cSasha\u201d Troufanov.<\/p>\n<p>Opening his remarks by addressing Holocaust survivors in attendance, Netanyahu said, \u201cYou bear on you the scars of the terrible devastation, but also represent the heroism, the spirit that guarantees our existence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the Holocaust, we were like dust, carried away by the wind,\u201d continued the prime minister. \u201cOur brothers and sisters, the Six Million, they were taken helpless to the pits of death\u2014and to the infernos of fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we have a powerful force that protects us, respected by the entire world. We have a country, we have an army, we have security forces, we have amazing soldiers who have a very fierce spirit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an army of lions. (Photo by Prime Minister&#8217;s Spokesperson)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn this Yom Hashoah, I promise that the military pressure on Hamas will continue, we will completely annihilate all of its capabilities, we will bring back all the hostages, we will triumph over Hamas and we will prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons,\u201d added the premier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jewish state \u201cwill not lose, will not give in and will not surrender\u2014that is my mission as the prime minister of the State of Israel; that is the mission of all of us,\u201d the longtime Israeli leader said, adding \u201cTogether, we stand, together we fight and together, God willing, we will win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Herzog opened his address with a call for unity among the people of Israel, saying that Holocaust survivors \u201cbegged and demanded\u201d that he work to end the \u201cterrible\u201d division the nation has seen in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the voice of those heroic Holocaust survivors, and of a vast public terrified by the polarization and division tearing us apart\u2014I appeal to you from the depths of my heart: Let us unite, all the House of Israel,\u201d the head of state said. \u201cLet us lower the flames. The photo was taken as they entered the camp and found within it the final remnants of entire families, the last trace of once-glorious communities reduced to dust and ashes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cLet us transform these days\u2014from now until Independence Day, the Ten Days of Sanctity\u2014into a historic moment of national responsibility,\u201d proposed Herzog. \u201cLet us mourn together, yearn together; let us hurt together\u2014and yes, today as well, let us stand tall\u2014together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the 59 hostages in Hamas captivity in Gaza, he said, \u201cA whole nation is with you. A whole nation misses you, worries for you, cries out your cries. A whole nation, anguished and tormented, its soul scorched, knows it will find no comfort or solace until you all return home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so I say to you\u2014the people of Israel and to our brothers and sisters in the Diaspora: We shall overcome, again,\u201d the president said. \u201cMay the memory of the millions who perished in the Holocaust be blessed\u2014and safeguarded in the heart of our people, from generation to generation.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony marked the beginning of the second Yom Hashoah since Oct. 7, 2023\u2014the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/after-oct-7-shoah-exam-optional-for-israeli-high-schoolers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worst single-day slaughter<\/a>&nbsp;of Jews since the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed from sundown on Wednesday to sundown on Thursday.
