At the conclusion of the Holy Day, the Kohen Gadol was brought his own clothes and accompanied to his home. The next day, he hosted a \u201cYom Tov L\u2019Ohavav\u201d \u2013 a festive celebration, a feast for friends, family, loved ones, and the public. This \u201cday after\u201d celebration was known as \u201cSimchat Kohen\u201d \u2013 \u201cthe Rejoicing of the Priest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Perhaps this celebration was an expression of gratitude for surviving the Yom Kippur ritual: an outcome not to be taken for granted by the priest, on whose proper discharge of Temple protocols fateful personal and national consequences depended.<\/p>\n
Rabbi Shlomo Leib of Lantshna (1788-1843) taught that the priest hosted this celebration for his loved ones and friends because it was only thanks to their goodness, kindness, and sustained support that he could find the strength and confidence to enter the Holy of Holies, and adequately to carry out his sacred role there.<\/p>\n
Today \u2013 Simchat Kohen \u2013 is a sacred opportunity to acknowledge what we have achieved… and those without whose support it never would have happened!<\/p>\n
