When ordered to return, he resisted: \u201cI\u2019m not coming in\u2026 this is fun!\u201d Minutes later, climbing back inside, unforgettably he said: \u201cIt\u2019s the saddest moment of my life.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Years later, Alan Shepard stood on the lunar surface and, looking back at Earth, wept --experiencing what scientists now call the \u201coverview effect,\u201d a cognitive shift that comes from seeing our planet from space. White was overwhelmed by the vastness of the cosmos; Shepard by the fragility and beauty of home.<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Most of us will never float in space or walk on the moon. But <b>awe<\/b> isn\u2019t reserved for astronauts. It lives within every soul, waiting to be awakened in everyday wonders.<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\u2728<b>3 Ideas<\/b><\/p><ol start=\"1\"><li><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>What Awe Is -- The Soul\u2019s Response to Transcendence <\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Awe is that unmistakable \u201cwow\u201d -- whether standing at the Grand Canyon, hearing a symphony swell, or beholding a baby\u2019s perfect tiny foot. It\u2019s humbling and exhilarating at once: we feel small yet expanded, connected to something greater than ourselves.<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>In awe, the soul whispers: <\/b><b><i>this matters<\/i><\/b><b>. <\/b><\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"> Awe arises when we encounter something vast, beautiful or morally profound -- something that stops us in our tracks, transcending our ordinary understanding. <\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>What Blocks Us From Awe -- Taking the Amazing for Granted<\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Children live in constant fascination, but somewhere along the way, most of us grow numb to what surrounds us. Why? Because <b>yesterday\u2019s wonder becomes today\u2019s wallpaper<\/b> -- we get used to the miraculous and call it mundane.<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">We treat people as objects, experiences as interruptions, and life itself as a checklist.<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">The extraordinary becomes invisible through repetition: the sunrise, a leaf\u2019s design, the birth of a child. We mistake life as familiarity, when all of existence is extraordinary.<\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>Cultivating Awe -- The Fascination Formula <\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">We don\u2019t have to wait for awe to find us; we can cultivate it deliberately. Back then, Fortune Magazine reported Gates had a personal wealth of $35 billion. After his speech, Dr. John Cantwell Kiley, a medical doctor with a Ph.D. in philosophy, stood up and asked, \u201cMr. Gates, if you were blind, would you trade all of your billions to have your sight restored?\u201d Without hesitation, Gates replied, \u201cI\u2019d trade all my money for my sight.\u201d <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Awe-inspiring wonders surround us every day -- but we\u2019ve grown used to them, and they fade into invisibility.
