The city was a major port of entry for these survivors, most of whom had been living in Displaced Persons Camps since the end of the war. After arriving and given the choice of moving elsewhere or making New Orleans their permanent home, 150 men, women and children elected to stay.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, only one \u2013 the indomitable Anne Skorecki Levy \u2013 is the last of the Holocaust survivors still alive.<\/p>\n<p>Levy was in attendance on the front row last Thursday, March 19,&nbsp; when Menszer and several museum officials of the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience (MSJE),&nbsp; 818 Howard Avenue in the Downtown Development District, officially opened a new temporary exhibit there in the museum&#8217;s third floor exhibition space.<\/p>\n<p>Titled &#8220;Holocaust Survivors in a New Land: The New Americans Social Club of New Orleans,&#8221;&nbsp; the photographic essay, combined with artifacts curated by museum curator Michael Jacobs. Knowing how important it is to tell their stories as a legacy to all that went before, he pulled together Menszer&#8217;s images and interviews to tell their stories with reverence and dignity.<\/p>\n<p>Menszer and Jacobs both credited Elaine Menszer, z&#8221;l, his mother, as having been the initial inspiration for his work that began in the early 1990s. His mother began listening and recording the stories of Holocaust survivors in New Orleans first.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In 1972, Brandeis Women&#8217;s Group was doing a project to record on tape Holocaust survivors and my mother took to the project like a laser, but they didn&#8217;t invent lasers back then&#8221; Menszer stated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She would come home at night saying &#8216;Oh, I talked to this person and he was in 17 concentration camps.&#8217; It was just amazing,&#8221; Menszer continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I remember how moved she was, but I also felt a bit scared,&#8221; he admitted. &#8220;Because I was a Jew and I realized as a child, that if it could happen to a Jew in Europe, it could happen to a Jew here. It could happen to me. (Photo by Alan Smason)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While he was struck by the depth of his mother&#8217;s probing, it wasn&#8217;t until the 1990s, after he had taken up photography as a hobby, that he elected to dedicate himself to Holocaust history and preservation.<\/p>\n<p>He had just attended a talk on the Holocaust given by Levy and the late Jeanine Burk at the Tulane Women&#8217;s Center and it resonated within him. When asked by a teacher what project he wanted work on, he had no answer initially. But after careful reflection, he chose to catalog the members of the New Americans Social Club, many of whom he did not know.<\/p>\n<p>It started him on the path he has taken for the past several decades as a chronicler of the local Holocaust survivors. He reasoned that he knew several from his synagogue and that he would attempt to befriend them all, perhaps eventually to gain their trust. (Photo by Alan Smason)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Many who invited him into their homes allowed him to interview them on several occasions and eventually they were caught up in the retelling of the stories, they ignored the camera or the tape recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Through the interview and photographic process, Menszer was given special access to stories they had not spoken out loud to many others including their own families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They told me that since they lost all their family, they didn&#8217;t have grandparents. They didn&#8217;t have sisters and brothers in most cases,&#8221; Menszer recalled. &#8220;So they formed the club and they became family for each other and that&#8217;s what this show is all about. It&#8217;s about the family that they created for themselves which allowed them to lead happy, useful lives here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The result is a moving exhibit that gives insight into these 150 survivors who arrived in New Orleans after World War II and made it their home. (Photo by Alan Smason)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But Menszer was quick to point out they did not need support after a few years, that they had begun their own careers as useful, productive citizens. &#8220;They bettered themselves. They started having children,&#8221; Menszer opined. &#8220;When you see the picture upstairs of all the children at a child&#8217;s party, you will know what made their lives really worthwhile. It was the ability to survive and keep the Jewish people going and to have their families to be a nest where they could live and love.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, as he had hoped, he became an extended part and an honorary member of the New Americans Social Club they had founded. They invited him to many of their functions like Chanukah parties and Purim parties and they socialized a lot. &#8220;I got very close to these people and I miss them a lot,&#8221; he mused.<\/p>\n<p>Menszer said that the devastation from Hurricane Katrina most directly affected the survivors&#8217; community. Several of them died either shortly after the storm and the severe conditions made returning to New Orleans difficult at best. Most of the photos were seen at various Yom Ha&#8217;Shoah events of the past, but much of the recorded material lay in collections in boxes gathering dust until Menszer approached MSJE officials asking if they might&nbsp; like to inspect his work.<\/p>\n<p>Museum executive director Kenneth Hoffman suggested this should become a frequent stop for members of the New Orleans Jewish community to help tell the story of the Holocaust because so many of the survivors are gone today.
