(JTA) \u2014 President Donald Trump heckled the leaders of Iran at the first-ever Republican midterm convention on Wednesday, while promoting the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe war will be over very shortly after the election,\u201d Trump said in a 100-minute address. \u201cThey\u2019re hanging out for dear life, hoping that we lose, so they can deal with dumb, weak Democrats, and they can have their nuclear bomb. But we\u2019re not going to let that happen.\u201d <\/p>\n

The president expressed confidence that Iran is \u201cgoing to be quitting or dropping out\u201d of the war \u201cright after Election Day, because they want a deal desperately.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re winning it,\u201d Trump said, referring to the war in Iran. \u201cWe control the Hormuz Strait.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Israel started the war in February 2026. Since then, Trump has repeatedly predicted victory or an imminent end to the conflict. But six months later, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains severely disrupted amid competing U.S. and Iranian efforts to control the vital waterway. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Iran said it attacked 10 ships near the strait after the U.S. sank five Iranian oil tankers, in the largest exchange of attacks on shipping by the two sides since the war began. <\/p>\n

\u201cI should get something out of this \u2014 the Trump Strait,\u201d the president continued, repeating an idea he had proposed about a week ago. \u201cI\u2019ll have an announcement. We\u2019ll call it the Trump Strait, and I\u2019m sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Declaring that they\u2019re probably not \u201ctoo happy about anything,\u201d Trump said that Iran \u201cis falling apart\u201d and described the country as \u201cthe bully of the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not the bully anymore,\u201d the president continued. \u201cWe\u2019re the hottest country anywhere in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
