He once told me about an exercise he regularly used with the doctors he mentored.<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">The young doctors examined a \u201cstandardized patient\u201d -- someone trained to present particular symptoms and concerns -- then reported their observations and possible diagnosis to Dr. Siegel. But before they could begin, he would ask one question: <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cWhat color were the patient&#39;s eyes?\u201d<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Almost invariably, the young doctors couldn&#39;t answer. And they wondered why something as seemingly insignificant as eye color mattered at all. Why did Dr. Siegel think it did?<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\u2728<b>3 Ideas<\/b><\/p><ol start=\"1\"><li><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>Awareness wakens wonder<\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Stand at the rim of the Grand Canyon, and its vastness practically demands your attention. But much of life\u2019s beauty makes no such demand -- stars filling the night sky, fireflies flashing on a summer evening, or the stillness of freshly fallen snow. <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>Awareness allows us to discover what was there all along<\/b>. <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">The world doesn\u2019t become more beautiful or wondrous because we\u2019re paying attention; but when we do, we become more capable of receiving its beauty. <\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>Attentiveness opens the heart <\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Seeing another person means noticing more than what they say or do. Their expression, a change in tone, or an unexpected silence can be revealing. <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>Attentiveness can reveal what another person may never put into words<\/b>. <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Kindness and compassion take on a deeper spiritual dimension when we\u2019re proactive -- remembering a friend\u2019s birthday or noticing someone left out of a conversation. Our inner essence delights when we notice, rather than need to be reminded. <\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>Self-awareness opens a window<\/b><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Careful observation also includes turning our attention inward. It can reveal not only habits that need changing, but strengths and talents we may have overlooked. <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><b>Our weaknesses tell us where we need to grow. Our strengths tell us where we are meant to give<\/b>. <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Classic wisdom teaches that someone unaware of their faults doesn\u2019t know what needs correcting -- but someone unaware of their strengths faces an even greater loss. Seeing ourselves more clearly brings more of what is uniquely ours into the world. <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#d0e0e3;\">----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<\/span><\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\ud83d\udcdc<b>2 Quotes<\/b><\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cThe purpose in a man\u2019s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.\u201d <br>\u2014 <i>Proverbs 20:5<\/i><\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\u201cHide not your talents, they for use were made, What\u2019s a sun-dial in the shade?\u201d <br>\u2014 <i>Benjamin Franklin<\/i><\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#d0e0e3;\">----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<\/span><\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\u2753<b>1 Question<\/b><\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">What is something you\u2019ve recently noticed about the world, other people, or yourself that you hadn\u2019t previously paid attention to? <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#d0e0e3;\">----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<\/span><\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">So why did Dr. Siegel ask the young doctors about the color of the patient\u2019s eyes?<\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">He explained that they weren\u2019t merely examining bodies -- they were interacting with human beings. If they hadn\u2019t looked closely enough at the patient to notice something as basic as their eye color, perhaps they hadn\u2019t fully seen the person in front of them. <\/p><p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Dr. Siegel\u2019s question carried a lesson far beyond the examining room.
