This Shabbat, I will be serving my congregation as Torah Reader. I have taken on this liturgical role in memory of my mother, whose 35th<\/sup> Yahrzeit is this Shabbat. The Torah Reading is Parshat Ha\u2019azinu<\/em> \u2013 almost entirely a poem or song. This strikes me as especially befitting, as my mother loved music. I cherish childhood memories of her singing me songs in English, German, French, and Yiddish!<\/p>\n

\u201cSplendor is Yours\u201d serves effectively as a synopsis of Ha\u2019azinu\u2019s song of praise, encrypted into the poem itself.<\/p>\n

Some understand the acronym as promising restoration of Israel\u2019s full splendor and a luminous future.<\/p>\n

Others understand \u201cHa-Ziv Lecha\u201d as describing Moses\u2019 radiant countenance.<\/p>\n

\u201cHa-Ziv Lach\u201d \u2013 As I chant Ha\u2019azinu this Shabbat, I will remember my mother… grateful for the splendor of the too few years we had together.<\/p>\n
