We thereby fulfill the requirement that Kiddush be recited b’Makom Se’udah – where the Shabbat meal is held (Pesachim 101; OH 273:1). This may well be the origin of the congregational Oneg Shabbat (popularly, but less precisely, the “Oneg”).

The term “Oneg Shabbat” (and the ultimate function of such collations) is rooted in Isaiah 58:13-14…

“If you… call the Sabbath a delight (‘Oneg’), the Lord’s holy day honored…then you will delight (tit’anag – from ‘Oneg’) and find favor with the Lord.”

Reprising Isaiah, the Shabbat Musaf Amidah asserts that “those who observe Shabbat and those who call Shabbat a delight (kor’ei Oneg Shabbat) will rejoice in Your Kingdom… and delight (yit’angu) in Your goodness”

Wholeheartedly delighting in Shabbat – not merely abiding by its prescriptions and prohibitions – is essential to an authentic Shabbat experience. To be Shomer Shabbat indicates one’s religious compliance. Oneg Shabbat – truly to love and embrace Shabbat is…

…simply a delight.

Rabbi Joseph H.
