SANDRA BROWN BURSTEIN, a highly-regarded businesswoman and community leader, passed away on May 6, 2019 after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. She was 78.
A successful businesswoman who once received the New Orleans Businesswoman of the Year award, she followed her husband as president of his self-named Irwin Brown Company, a local customs house broker and freight forwarder, founded in 1968. She was also a member of the Board of Directors of the International Freight Forwarders and Customs Brokers Association of New Orleans.
In the 1980s, she served as president of the Jewish Family Service of New Orleans. She was a long time member of Shir Chadash Conservative Congregation and served it, and its predecessor Tikvat Shalom, as a volunteer in numerous capacities including the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. In 2002, the Shir Chadash Sisterhood selected her to receive the Southern Branch Light of Torah Award from the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism.
Burstein was a longtime resident of the New Orleans area and was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She attended Brooklyn College and graduated from Newcomb College in 1962.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Irwin M. Brown, and her second husband, Herbert H. Burstein, in 2008. She is survived by her children Howard Brown (Donna), Sharon Brown Sherry (Lance),Kira Brown and stepdaughter Cynthia Burstein Waldman (Vince), her brother Shelly Bernstein (Benay) and six grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted by Rabbi Deborah Silver at Shir Chadash Conservative Congregation, 3737 W Esplanade Avenue in Metairie on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. Burial followed at Jewish Burial Rites Cemetery.
