Cantor Colman to headline New Orleans Opera event tonight

Cantor Joel Colman’s booming bass-baritone voice will be heard in the sanctuary tonight at Temple Sinai, but not in his usual fashion, providing hazanuth for his congregation’s worship services.

Instead, the cantor will be a featured performer in an Opera Nouvelle presentation of the New Orleans Opera Association titled “Opera Americana: Music to Lift the Spirit.”

The event being held at Temple Sinai, 6227 St Charles Ave, will begin at 7:00 p.m. with doors scheduled to open at 6:30 p.m.

The program will  include American spirituals, some selections from musical theatre as well as American opera. The cantor will be part of a group of eight vocalists who will offer a wide variety of selections including  solos, duets, quintets and ensembles. In addition to Cantor Colman the program will feature pianist and keyboardist Jesse Reeks, tenors Tyler Smith and Mark-Anthony Thomas, soprano Taylor Ott and mezzo sopranos Lindsey Ware and Tameria Mosley.

Included on the program will be a preview of the Opera Association’s upcoming “Charlie Parker’s Yardbird” that plays the weekend of Friday, April 3 through Sunday, April 5, 2020 at the New Orleans Jazz Market.

Education Director William Mouat will serve as the program’s emcee.
