Obituaries

Obituaries are published at the discretion of the CCJN and are free of charge. Obituaries are a product of the editorial department and are a story of a person’s life. Editorial policy may determine the length and content of an obituary. Death notices are submitted by family members and may, for example, fully list all survivors. Death notices are never edited, but are assessed a processing fee according to length. Photos for obituaries may also carry a processing fee of $18.00, which can be waived at the discretion of the CCJN. Payments for photos can be submitted to CCJN, 3810 Nashville Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70125 or paid securely through PayPal.

Jonathan Woocher, leading Jewish educational theorist, dies at 70

(JTA) — Jonathan Woocher, who helped shaped American Jewish educational priorities as the longtime head of the Jewish Educational Service of North America and later as founding president and senior fellow of the Lippman Kanfer Foundation for Living Torah, has died.

Woocher, who lived in South Orange, New Jersey, died Friday at age 70. The cause was cancer, according to an announcement by the Lippman Kanfer Foundation.

Bernard ‘Bernie’ Burk is laid to rest in FL

BERNARD “BERNIE” BURK,  a retired attorney who had lived most of his life in New Orleans, died in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on June 30. He was 80.

When he lived in the Crescent City, he was affiliated with Congregation Beth Israel.

Burk is survived by his wife of many years, Barbara Bienn Burk, his son, Kevin Burk of California, his daughter, Michelle Ligon, his sister-in-law Jeanine Burk and a granddaughter.

Local physician Peter Zimmerman dies suddenly; funeral in NY

PETER ZIMMERMAN, M.D., a pain management specialist with offices in Metairie, Slidell and Baton Rouge, died suddenly on Friday, June 23. He was 57.

Zimmerman was a physiatrist, whose work involved determining the cause of pain in his patients and treating them with medication, injections or other treatments to diminish or completely eliminate their pain response.

Gerson Lachoff, 84, is laid to rest

GERSON LACHOFF, a retired accountant, passed away peacefully June 12, 2017 at Willowwood in New Orleans. He was 84.

Lachoff is survived by his sister, Benah Klafert, and other extended family members like his nephew, Irwin Lachoff (Judith).

A graduate from Tulane University, he became an accountant for Lykes Brothers Shipping for more than three decades. Lachoff was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
