CCJN gains 2 writing nods at Press Club Awards

The Press Club of New Orleans honored the Crescent City Jewish News for the second year in a row with a first place award for journalistic excellence.  CCJN editor Alan Smason won the first place award in the category of Entertainment Writing for his piece on performer and composer Valerie Sassyfras titled “Valerie Sassyfras: A Musical Phoenix Emerges.” That August 2014 article was published in SOURCE 5775. The Press Club Awards were nominated locally, but were judged nationally by members of nine different press clubs across the nation.

CCJN editor Alan Smason holds his first place award trophy for entertainment writing, while CCJN marketing and advertising director Arlene Wieder holds his third place award.

The Press Club Awards covered the calendar year of 2014 and the ceremonies were held on Saturday night, July 18, at Harrah’s Casino.

Smason also received a third place honor in the feature writing field for his article also published in SOURCE 5775 on the local influence of the Jewish community in the development of jazz music titled “Jews and Jazz.”

Another Jewish recipient of 2015 Press Club Awards was Lee Zurik of WVUE-TV Fox 8, who picked up two first place awards for his broadcast TV reports. Also recognized with a third place award in public affairs broadcasting were members of the National Council of Jewish Women  and Fox 8 reporter Shelley Brown for their Fox Defenders consumer advocacy program.
