CCJN receives four nominations for upcoming Press Club of N.O. Awards

The Crescent City Jewish News has received a total of four nominations as finalists in two categories for the upcoming 2022 Excellence in Journalism Awards sponsored by the Press Club of New Orleans,

CCJN editor Alan Smason was cited for two of the three finalists for both the Best Editorial and Best Critical Arts Review categories under the heading of Print .

Under the category of Best Editorial, Smason’s editorials on the Trump presidency “A Failed and Flawed President” and the first year of living under the COVID pandemic, “An Anniversary To Remember and a Year To Forget” were selected. The CCJN took home this award in 2019 and received the Ashton Phelps Sr. Memorial Award as one of the “best in show” awards presented for that year.

Under the category of Best Critical Arts Review, Smason’s review of the Rivertown production of “Hello, Dolly!”  – “Don’t Wait or This Dolly Will Go Away” –and an article about local actor Dave Davis’ casting in the film “The Vigil”  – were both selected as finalists. The CCJN also won this category in 2019. Rien Fertel of 64 Parishes magazine is also nominated in this category for a book review. Fertel has won the award for the previous two consecutive years.

In addition, Smason is a regular panelist on “Steppin’ Out,” the weekly arts and entertainment show produced by Peggy Scott Laborde. It was one of three shows selected for Best Talk show under the heading of Television.

The winners will be announced at the Press Club’s annual gala and fundraiser, which will be held at the Higgins Hotel, 1000 Magazine Street, on Saturday, July 30.
