COVID-19 cases grow by 42% statewide; death toll now at 310

Louisiana registered a 42% increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases as the death toll increased to 310 deaths, among them a musical icon of jazz, Ellis Marsalis, Jr., and a legendary high school football coach, Wayne Reese of McDonough 35, one of only 24 coaches to achieve 250 wins.

Nearby St. John the Baptist Parish has posted the highest death rate in the country, sharply affected by a cluster of COVID-19 cases at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans nursing home that claimed seven lives. Another 14 deaths in the parish have so overwhelmed health officials and medical facililities that a refrigerated truck is being brought in to store bodies as they are prepared for transport to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office, the closest facility to deal with determining causes of death.
