Elaine Blau Rabin, community volunteer, dies at 82
ELAINE BLAU RABIN, a community volunteer and leader, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019 in Metairie. She was 82.
Along with her identical twin sister, Rabin was a local celebrity in her hometown of Detroit, MI. as the two were the first-born New Year’s babies of 1937. The Detroit News featured annual updates of the twins until their 18th birthdays.
She was active in many civic organizations including B’nai B’rith, the New Orleans Section of the National Council of Jewish Women and served as president of the Greater New Orleans Chapter of Hadassah. She was an avid mah johng player and was known for throwing her famous Chanukah party, where she displayed her renowned collection of Chanukiot and fed latkes to hundreds of attendees.
She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, David Rabin, her daughter, Ruth Rabin, and her granddaughter, Hannah Rabin. She is survived by her sons, Neil (Brigitte Pailet), Richard, and Arnold Rabin, and siblings, Larry (Diane) and Roger Blau (Joanne); six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at Congregation Gates of Prayer, 4000 West Esplanade Ave., Metairie, LA 70002, on Wednesday October 16, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Rabbi David Gerber will officiate.
Interment will follow at Hebrew Rest Cemetery, 2100 Pelopidas St. There will be no shiva minyan due to Chol HaMoed Succot, but the family will be receiving visitors at Neil Rabin’s house in Metairie, following the service.
