Financial specialist Jay Buckman dies in Houston

JAY LEONARD BUCKMAN, an attorney and financial specialist, died on September 13, 2019 in his adopted home of Houston. He was 79.

A New Orleans native, Buckman was a graduate of  Isidore Newman School before embarking on a collegiate career at Tulane University. He received a bachelor in business administration (BBA) degree in 1962 and fast-tracked his way to a juris doctor degree from the Tulane School of Law in 1964.

It was at Tulane that he met Jane Gurry, a fellow New Orleanian. The two were wed for 56 years.

He was the managing partner of the Kolton, Buckman and Ortiz Consultants firm in Metairie and owner of Jay L. Buckman (APAC).

Buckman was a tireless worker and a Personal Financial Specialist (PFS), who dedicated himself to clients. His knowledge of the law and his personal insights into managing wealth created opportunities and bonds he treasured over the course of many decades. He frequently recommended the use of purchasing insurance policies to help clients protect assets over a long term.

After the devastation from Hurricane Katrina, the Buckmans moved to Houston where their son’s family was living.

Buckman had many hobbies through the years. He enjoyed horseback riding, canoeing and occasionally would ski in Colorado at resorts like Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain in Vale or Aspen.  However, his favorite competition was dog agility. He and his AKC champion dog Nike competed throughout the United States to great success.

In addition to his wife Jane, Buckman is survived by  his son Jay, Jr., daughter Kim Davis (Steven), his brother Danny Buckman (Audrey) and four grandchildren.  A private memorial service by the family was held in New Orleans.

Memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
