Former bridal coordinator and retail sales clerk Sylvia Stone Shushan is dead at 107

SYLVIA STONE SHUSAN,  passed away on April 6, 2025. She was 107.

SYLVIA STONE SHUSHAN

She married Shepard Shushan in 1948, a marriage that lasted for 14 years until his death, making her a widow at the age of 42. Though she was a not a native, she grew to love New Orleans and lived in the Uptown dream home in which she and her husband raised their two girls.  She often entertained a close-knit group of friends and family.

Following her husband’s death, Shushan became the bridal coordinator for Maison Blanche on Canal Street for many years.  She loved working with brides and their mothers and to this day women say “Mrs. Shushan married me.”  She was also an active member of the Fashion Group.  After Maison Blanche closed, Sylvia worked as the bridal coordinator at Gus Mayer.  She next worked at Ruffles women’s clothing store in Uptown Square and then for many years at British Antiques on Magazine Street, retiring at 92.  She made lifelong friends wherever she was.

She was on a first-name basis with every merchant and antique dealer in the French Quarter and loved jazz music and New Orleans culture.  At one of the more memorable parties she hosted for her friends was a production of “One Mo’ Time” at the Toulouse Theatre.

Always elegant, Sylvia never skimped on clothes, although she saved S&H Green Stamps and clipped coupons religiously.

She is survived by her two daughters Sally Shushan and Elle Shushan, who lives in Philadelphia.
