Jewish couples or singles of reproductive age are advised that JScreen, an organization that runs genetic screening tests for free or at a greatly reduced price will be conducting screenings at the Uptown JCC on June 11 between 12 noon and 4 p.m.
Ashkenazic Jews have been shown to be at higher risk for many diseases transmitted to children such as Tay Sachs and Gaucher disease.
The first 50 couples or singles to pre-register online will be free. After that, the cost of each screening will be offered at a reduced price of $54.00. Regularly, tests of this sort cost at least $149.00, according to JScreen.
Interested parties are advised to pre-register at JScreen.org and prepare a kit found online. Select the JCC New Orleans location and enter any relevant insurance information. A code of “NOLA 54” (without quotations) must be entered to obtain the discount.
Those taking the screenings are advised not to eat, drink or smoke 30 minutes prior to arrival. Walk-ins will be welcomed.
