Insurance underwriter John Wittenberg has private rites

JOHN H. WITTENBERG, a New Orleans insurance underwriter for more than 50 years, passed away on March 10, 2019. He was 85.

Wittenberg was vice chairman of Insurance Underwriters, Ltd., where he specialized in commercial and personal insurance. Formerly, he was the president of the Ferd. Marks -Smither Insurance Agency, Ltd.

A graduate of Isidore Newman School, Wittenberg earned a degree in business administration at Tulane University, where he was also a member of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. Following six months of active service in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a Second Lieutenant, Wittenberg entered the Army Reserve, from which he eventually retired with the rank of Captain.

Wittenberg was a member of the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club, Lakewood Country Club, the Audubon Tennis Club, the Plimsoll Club and the Krewe of Bacchus Carnival organization.

Preceded in death by his wife, Frances “Frankie” Wittenberg in 2014, he is survived by his daughters Terri (Chris) Benton and Susan (John) Callahan and two grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be conducted by Rabbi Matthew Reimer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Communities in Schools, 3400 Bienville St, New Orleans, LA 70119. Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home of Metairie was in charge of arrangements.
