Head of school Brad Philipson officiated over the program that also welcomed new school Rabbi Michael Cohen, who led the school in several prayers and the Pledge of Allegiance. Lauren Gisclair led the students in the singing of “Hatikvah,” the Israeli national anthem.

New students and faculty members were given paper flowers and they were all ushered beneath the four fringe corners of a tallit held by four rabbis – Rabbi Cohen, Beth Israel Rabbi Josh Pernick, Shir Chadash Rabbi Deborah Silver and Congregation Gates of Prayer Rabbi David Gerber.

Rabbi Pernick was joined by his administrative Rabbi David Posternock, also of Congregation Beth Israel. Rabbi Posternock, who is a former faculty member with children in the school, blew a special Yemenite shofar to signal the beginning of the school year.

It was also the first day of the newly-designated Howard and Susan Green Pre-K Nursery School.
