JWV Ben Katz Post selects first woman officer

The Ben Katz Post # 580 of the Jewish War Veterans (JWV) of the United States of America elected its first woman officer, veteran Ms. Jacqueline “Jackie” Goldberg, as senior-vice post commander during elections this past Sunday, Dec. 2.

Judge Sol Gothard, ret., was re-elected as post commander, while Elliot Bain was selected as junior-vice post commander. Bruce Waltzer will assume the position of staff judge advocate.

Junior officers elected were Mrs. Carol Berman, chief of staff; Lewis Shuman, adjutant; Joel Picker, quartermaster; Dr. Louis Trachtman, surgeon/hospital officer; Edward Young, color sergeant; and Rabbi David Posternock, chaplain.

For the last nine years, Post commander Gothard has overseen the top leadership of the former Jules Lazard Post. The post was renamed in honor of its longtime commander, Ben Katz, several years ago. Several years after taking over the post, Gothard was recognized as having one of the most diverse and fastest-growing posts in the country.

All officers-elect will be officially installed at the JWV Department of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma (DTALO) Conference Banquet to be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 6:45pm. The installation ritual and installation of officers will be conducted by DTALO Commander, Scott Stevens, of El Paso, Texas. At this time, the newly-elected JWV National Commander Dr. Barry J. Schneider, is also scheduled to attend.

The banquet’s location is the Holiday Inn Metairie, 2261 N. Causeway Blvd., in Metairie. For banquet and ticket information email Gothard or email Berman.
