Dr. Barry Schneider, the National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States (JWV), presided over the regional conference in Metairie this past weekend that ran from Fri., January 18 through today, January 21. The winter convention , which he helped initiate with the help of local Ben Katz Post # 580 members, drew regional members and non-veteran patrons from the Department of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma, collectively known as TALO.
The conference, which drew some 50 regional and local members, was headquartered at the Holiday Inn in Metairie and was highlighted by a dinner program held on Sat. evening there. Guests were called together by TALO Commander Scott Stevens.
An honor guard from Tulane University Army R.O.T.C. presented and posted the colors followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by Elliott Bain of the local post, a POW/MIA ceremony by JWV Post # 755 Ron Silvernell.
An invocation by TALO Chaplain Norton Schectman preceded a welcome from Stevens. Following dinner, thre Tulane R.O.T.C. Commanders from the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force spoke on their programs.
Local Post # 580 officers were installed by Stevens including Jaclyn “Jackie” Goldberg as the post’s first female vice commander. Carol Berman was elected as chief of staff for the post.
Judge Sol Gothard, who was re-elected to his position delivered several remarks about the post before welcoming National Commander Dr. Barry Schneider of Fort Worth, Texas.
Following Dr. Schneider’s remarks, Stevens spoke and closed out the evening.
A morning brunch was held at Congregation Beth Israel prior to a visit to the National World War II Museum.
Members of the JWV participated in last Monday’s Martin Luther King , Jr. Day events before leaving for their respective homes.
